ALSOD is the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Online genetic Database.
It is designed to provide both the scientific community and wider public with up-to-date information on ALS genetics.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as motor neuron disease (MND), is a progressive, fatal neurological disease.
(See ALSA
and MNDA
websites for further information).
Genetic research is advancing at an extremely rapid pace.
The purpose of ALSOD is to curate the available evidence for genetic risk and modifying factors for ALS with summaries of the literature and links to appropriate genetic resources.
ALSOD began in 1999, with the original aim of allowing researchers to match genetic findings with patterns of ALS (genotype:phenotype correlation).
At the time, only one ALS-causing gene had been identified with certainty, SOD1.
With the advent of newer technologies, international collaborations between scientists and greater awareness of research aims by those affected by ALS,
what we are learning about ALS is expanding every day.

The use of ALSOD is on two levels. Anyone can search the available data and download or access links.
Registration also allows users to upload new information, or perform more detailed genetics analysis.
If ALSOD does not behave as you expect, or you would like to see a feature that is not yet implemented, please let us know.
